In his mind, Jesse L. Bridges held a vision. He wanted to meet the financial needs of the community and provide better services. After serving in the Navy, Bridges visited his grandparents' farm in South Carolina, where bartering was his only source of credit. In response to his grandmother's request, Bridges found employment as an assistant manager. His roles in this consumer finance company helped him save money for college fees while improving these services. As his love for the company grew, he decided to skip college and start his company. Jesse approached investors who lent him the required capital. Security Finance officially began on October 4, 1955. The first branch was opened at 240 Church Street, Spartanburg.
